Nebraska Department of Education:

  • Hastings College PHIVE-O (Peer HIV Education Organization) in Hastings, Nebraska has been doing HIV prevention work on campus and in the larger community since 1991.  This select group of college students learns about HIV prevention through the Red Cross HIV/AIDS Facts and HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Instructor courses, and teaches every incoming Hastings College student in Living and Learning at HC courses.  In addition, they teach other groups when invited to do so, and they sponsor World AIDS Day and Sexual Responsibility Week every year.  In this way, they keep the issues of HIV in the forefront to their peers as well as community members.  Many of the alumni of this program are now teachers, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, social workers, and members of other careers where they can teach others.  These alumni do continue to educate about HIV/AIDS both formally and informally, and they continue to volunteer for AIDS service organizations and prevention work.  PHIVE-O has been the recipient of regional and national collegiate peer education awards because of their successes.  In addition, many individual members have been honored by various organizations for their work.
